Result announcement

Response to the competition is most encouraging and over 1,600 entries from 859 participants have been received. The University expresses its sincere thanks to all members of the OUHK community and the general public for their support. Below is the participation breakdown:

After rounds of deliberate consideration and discussion, the Judging Panel comprising members of the University’s senior management, representatives of Court, Council and the OUHK community as well as professional team of the Department of Creative Arts, has reached a conclusion and shortlisted the winning entries.

As stipulated in the Terms and Conditions, the University has decided not to adopt any of the winning designs but will appoint a professional design house to work out the new logo design. The winning entries will be handed over to the design house and taken as reference only.

The winning entries are:

Tsoi Ka-leong (Graduate of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Creative Advertising and Media Design)

The Council of The Open University of Hong Kong has approved the new title ‘Hong Kong Metropolitan University’ (都會大學) for the University and the process of amending the ordinance governing the University has been started and formal approval from the Legislative Council will be sought.

The new title marks the beginning of a new phase for the OUHK, which, being an integral part of an advancing metropolis, will continue its dedication to providing quality higher education. To celebrate this important milestone, we cordially invite creative talents from all members of the OUHK community (students, alumni and staff) and the general public to participate in our University Logo Design Competition and submit designs for a new logo.


How to join

Submission requirements

  • The logo must incorporate both the English and Chinese new title ‘Hong Kong Metropolitan University’ (香港都會大學). Each entry should include a brief introduction of about 200 words in either Chinese or English to illustrate the design concept.
  • The design should capture the meaning of the new title ‘Hong Kong Metropolitan University’ which can reflect the followings:
    • the University being an integral part of an advancing metropolis and contributing to the vibrancy and innovation of the city;
    • the title embraces diversity in the metropolis, which fits the present status and strategic goals of the University;
    • the title conveys the idea that our teaching and research are modern and forward-looking, and address the contemporary needs of the city and neighbouring regions;
    • the title reflects the innovative, progressive and diverse spirit the University, its students and alumni;
    • the title is neutral in academic inclination which facilitates the University to develop into new areas that meet the changing learning aspiration and talent needs of society.
  • Each design should be in a maximum of three colours. Both colour and black/white versions must be included.
  • Each participant is allowed to submit a maximum of three entries.

Submission formats

  • All entries must be in jpeg format. Each of them should not exceed 1280 x 1024 pixels or 5MB.
  • The University may request for hard-copy prints and editable digital files at a later stage.
  • Entries of scanned or photographed hand-drawn work will not be accepted.

Judging panel

The judging panel will comprise members of the University’s senior management, representatives of Court, Council and the OUHK community as well as professional team of the Department of Creative Arts.

Judging criteria

  • All entries will be assessed by the Judging Panel based on the following criteria:
    • Conveying the underlying message of the new title
    • Uniqueness
    • Aesthetic quality and sense of modernity
    • Originality and creativity
    • Scalability
    • Reproducibility


Awards and prizes

  • Grand Award: Cash prize of HK$50,000

  • First runner-up: Cash prize of HK$30,000

  • Second runner-up: Cash prize of HK$20,000
